Alcohol extraction is a process of removing essential oils, fats, and other chemical compounds from plants. This process is not exclusive to cannabis. It can be used with any plant. This unique chemistry to extract desirable compounds works very well with cannabis.
Cannabis alcohol extraction is the involves stripping the essential oils and trichomes from the marijuana plant by using either ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. Once the extra plant material is filtered out and the alcohol evaporates, a sticky and potent golden hash oil remains. Further purification through vacuum pressure, heat, or agitation can change the texture of the golden hash oil to oil, shatter, or budder, depending on the extraction process.
Ultimately, the goal is to produce the purest concentrate possible. The process of extraction is turning weed into an oil concentrate- the foundation for everything from vape oils to dabs to tinctures. Alcohol extraction is important because the better we get at it, the closer we get to turning cannabis into a safe and precise medicine.
